teaching the Foundations of Art and Design starts at an early age, but doesn’t end… ever! :) We all can explore our creativity with the foundations base, as a springboard to expression!
Student Work:

The Foundations of Art & Design is made up of simple concepts that can be made of almost anything! It's not just paint and pencil! We will explore line, color, shape, and form, using objects from around the house. They will learn about the principles of design (harmony, emphasis, etc) by talking about what they created. I almost make it like a game, building vocabulary and expression at the same time! I will present a 15 minute presentation about an element of art, and the students will create a piece using materials at their disposal. They will learn about professional artists that excel in the specific element. At the end of each session, we will share our work in a process called "descriptive review" where we share what we see in each other's work. Session 1: Elements of Art & Principles of Design: We will get to know each other and learn about the elements of art and principles of design, and the ground rules of thinking critically of our work, and our peer's work. Session 2: Line, Shape: We have been doing this for years, since we first picked up a pencil, but how many ways can we make lines and shapes? (We'll have to wait and see!) Session 3: Color and Color Theory: I teach color theory different than most, so we will observe our surrounds to find examples of what concepts of color theory is in our homes and natural world. Session 4: Form, Value, and Texture: We will construct dimensional drawings with objects found around the house and share with the group in an online critique (a technique that helps us take feedback and make changes). Session 5: Music on Paper: Rhythm, Movement, and Harmony: Find our favorite music and let your drawings dance like no one is watching! Session 6: Sticking Out: Contrast and Emphasis: We will explore how we can create contrast with color or in black and white. Session 7: Changing Scale and getting off balance: What are ways to play with size of objects and the environment? (This is a little lesson on public art). Session 8: Final Review and "Gallery Show" This class is meant to be flexible to the student's environment and available materials. They are welcome adapt their activities to fit what they have access to.
